We have returned from our long awaited, and long over due, vacation. Sadly...to be honest. I always hate leaving Eagle Crest. It's definitely one of my most favorite, sacred places.
The first moment I stepped out of our car last week Saturday and caught my first sniff of those lovely juniper trees I was in heaven! The first weekend we spent time with my folks & boy did I kick the weekend off like a rookie! Mom & I spent a few hours at the pool while the guys golfed -- and dope that I am entirely forgot to have sunscreen be put on my back! Well...except for the parts I could reach with my own hands, rubbing in my spray sunscreen! A mere 3-4hours later in the Central OR sun and I was pretty toasty! So toasty in fact that mom & I had to spend the next day in sweet Sisters, OR just to avoid the pool. How lame, the thing I love to do the most at Eagle Crest & I botched it for myself for like 2 days!
A nice weekend with my parents led straight in to a few days just Isaac & I -- which let me tell you....this time was much needed! We haven't had quiet, alone time with no work or football distractions in some time. Sure he took care of a few items but for the most part it was just us relaxing, watching the Olympics, and hanging out! Let's just say it was awesome :)
Highlight of my week was finishing about 5 books - and primarily the entire Hunger Games Trilogy. I'm not one who jumps on band wagons much. In fact, I tend to steer clear of all the "popular" things for a while. So with all the craziness dying down I tracked down a set & happily read thru them in 4 days. It was great! Not as intense as I was expecting, but the 3rd book definitely was the best of all 3. There were a few moments of "oh my goodness!" But it definitely makes me want to see the movie now & anticipate the upcoming movies!
And finally ended our week with wonderful friends joining us for the last few days. Time filled with my best girl friend at the pool while the boys went on adventures (let me tell you friends...this is the BEST set up for traveling with friends!). We'd laze around in the morning, make our way to the pool about 11am and stay there til mid afternoon. Ahhh...it was awesome! Highlight of this time was doing the Bend Ale Trail. The Bend, OR visitors center has a designated a route to take to visit some of the best known & newer breweries in the area. You go & taste, purchase some drinks & food and get a stamp! Once you've visited all the breweries you take your little pamphlet back to the visitors center for a prize! It's definitely a fun way to spend some time with good friends. It can be as cheap or as expensive as you want -- we spent some extra purchasing some beer pints at each spot & some yummy food. Definitely something to check in to!
Though I promised photos....I can not deliver. I get too focused on who I'm with and what we're doing to stop & document (silly me...). I think that's going to be one of my goals this fall while Isaac is off being a big time head coach & all. I'll start documenting what happens so we can look back & enjoy.
SUUUUUUUPER side note....Honey Isaac & I bought a new small vacuum cleaner (our hardwood one bit the dust after 3 years...) & it's a lovely Elextrolux. And sweetie Isaac said I could be just like Kelly Ripa now... Yah, not so sure about that. ;)
Happy to be home as always, but football is now in FULL swing with lineman camp this week, team camp next week, doubles the following week, & then practice before the first game. Jealous yet?? I'm trying to squeeze out my last few projects from Isaac and then it'll be all hands on deck for me with the house/cleaning/cooking/etc. Such is life!

a trip, some photos, & a thought
This past weekend, Isaac & I made our way to Denver. The objective in traveling to the Mile High City: visit with Isaac's brother, wife, & meet our new nephew Kapono. Definitely a trip we were looking forward to - and were happy to add it in to our typical 3 trip/year agenda. I mean who doesn't love holding a cooing baby?! Plus, it was really nice to have some quality time with my brother-in-law & sister-in-law. Time to rest, time to visit, time to just stare at the little guy & chuckle together at his pouty lip (that he is very quickly mastering). Parker man & I decided to stay at a hotel about 15/20 minutes from our family - mostly because I really didn't want to put pressure on them about having to "entertain" us, or worry about waking us or vice versa. It actually worked out really well....because one day my SIL Crystal had some errands to run & the boys wanted to shoot guns. So I dropped Parker man off at their house & made my way back to our hotel to rest, do some work, and putz around. Everyone did what they needed/wanted to do & were happy. Most of all it was just great to build some memories together and visit. Definitely my favorite thing to do. We even cooked up a quick Hawaiian dinner for Matt for his first Father's Day -- and I know being there for that made Isaac super proud of his brother. I can tell how proud he is of Matt & how well/fast he's taken to being a dad. A reminder of all the blessings in our families!
Here are a few photos snapped over the long weekend....sorry for the poor quality, I forgot our camera & only had the trusty iPhone available!

Kapono boy himself -- such a sweet heart! And with reddish/brown hair & light eyes, so cute!
Parker & Kapono visiting -- Pono was a fan of Uncle's tummy!
Big man put the little man in his jammies
On our last morning sitting in Pono's favorite spot -- the front porch.
Sad to leave the little guy but excited to see how he grows!
Parker man found a new "use" for the Boppy...haha
Kapono in love with his "My Little Lamb" swing. He was happy as a clam watching the mobile go round & round.
Isaac & I were reminded of how many blessings there are all around us. Though there are challenges, nothing really outshines or should out weigh the goodness that surrounds. Maybe it's babies that bring things back to center - their needs are simple. Their love pure. A reminder to care for & love one another in that same manner....to only expect people to be exactly who they are & respect them for that.

random
This past weekend was full of good friends, good conversation, and rest.
Talk about wonderful weekend!
Random thought -- I finally drug my butt back to the gym last night. Let's just say I've been on a long hiatus from the gym. And I've found that I go in swings, crazy intense amount of time spent at the gym to virtually none. So I'm trying to find a good balance of my time and going to the gym. Finding things that I enjoy and challenge me -- but don't cause me to loathe going. Last night's event: yoga. Man, I haven't done yoga in FOREVER & I definitely wish I hadn't taken such a long break. My legs were SHAKING nearly the entire class...and is it ever hard to hold 3 legged dog when your leg is shaking like a leaf! All in all, I'm glad I went. I felt great after wards, felt calm & collected. Woke up this morning feeling rested.
Tonight's agenda: walking with my running buddies. I'm slowly finding things that are life giving rather than life taking/exhausting. The goal is to be happy, healthy, & confident. Definitely not looking to be a body builder or compete. I want to simply be happy in my own skin & most importantly be thankful that I have a working body to be able to do things!
But the biggest highlight of our weekend......
Meet our new little nephew Kapono!! Such a sweet heart already. Isaac's younger brother & his wife made their way in to the hospital early on Friday, and baby Kapono made his appearance late Friday night. Isaac has lovingly nicknamed the kiddo "Jar Jar" in honor of Star Wars Appreciation Day (think "May the 4th/force be with you!"). Not sure my sister-in-law is totally on board with that, nor am I....but the brothers seem to think it's hilarious. We've already got a trip in the works in mid-June to meet the little guy. But we can already tell he's gonna be a heart breaker.
This month is gonna be nutty -- so hopefully I can stay on top of my blogging, I've been slacking as of late...but it's worth it, so I'll do my best! :)

I have found the Holy Grail....
Not to burst any one's Biblical bubble -- but I don't mean the actual Holy Grail. But my very own personal hair Holy Grail.
You are looking at the perfect specimen of a hair dumb girl. My entire life has been spent finding 2-3 ways of doing my hair & sticking with it. My sisters are so much older than me that we were always in two very different stages of life - so I never really had any girl/sister lessons on how to do different things with your hair. You're also looking at a girl who doesn't even really know how to curl her own hair well...shocking, I know. Thankfully my hair doesn't hold curl that well any way, so it's not too catastrophic.
And to add insult to injury - one of my older cousins is a super fabulous stylist. We're talking super wonderful/talented, does the hair for the Portland Trailblazer's wives, many of the TV anchors, politicians, etc. So I finally went up to see her for my cut & color -- mind you, the last time I think she did my hair was when I was about 6 years old & she had recently graduated from Vidal Sassoon in the early 90's. Let's just say there was a perm & tears involved (but this isn't the reason why I haven't been back to her).
I love my cousin - she, like I mentioned, is super fabulous. To say I was nervous to see her would be a gross under statement. And as I expected, she was none too happy with my routine. She quickly suggested I ween myself off my straightener...remember, I find one technique that works & stick with it...and teach myself to blow dry my hair straight with the use of useful tools.
Ok...I've gotten a bit off topic. So let's get to the point. I have spent the last week trying to get to know my new hair (not too different of a cut I've had previously but more on how I handle my hair). In an attempt to give my hair a break, and start to let it repair a bit I have found a few products that I'm already deeply in love with.
Insert fashion/beauty/lifestyle inspiration ala Sydney at the daybook & more specifically THIS post that led me to one of the best things I've ever encountered...i.e. my "Holy Grail" reference.
Ladies & Gents - allow me to introduce you to Suave Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo (a chorus of angels are singing....can you hear them?!). I've tried a number of dry shampoo options; all of which ultimately left my hair flat, greasy, and not "clean" feeling. This baby however -- amazing! Let's just say it smells AWESOME, gave me great volume, and has yet to leave any kind of nasty, greasy residue - even at days end!
Hopefully having this as an option will further allow me to let my hair breathe from the flat iron without fear of having nasty "dirty" hair that really looks dirty. Double bonus of this glory product -- PRICE! I think it was like $2.48 at my local Target. Hellllllo greatness!
And a follow up product also by the geniuses over at Suave:
This lightweight hair spray. For someone who doesn't/can't do much with a style most hairsprays are too heavy for me. So this little gem has me doing a little happy dance. It's an "ultra fine mist" and boy is it ever! Double bonus: smells awesome! Triple bonus: ALSO only about $2.50!
I'm starting to get the groove of round brush/blow drying my hair (shocking, I know....) and these little tools are helping the cause.
Random post from me I know -- but I just had to share! Happy Hair to you!

My Haven....(picture heavy)
I think my last post I shared about our cabin in WA & how much it means to me. This past weekend we did some work, but mostly rested. Mom & I left town in the early afternoon and drove the 4hrs to Ocean Shores...with a few stops for furniture/groceries in the mix. A few hours later my dad & hubby showed up (they both were working at their respective basketball games).
But as I promised...here is a mini photo tour of our cabin...I left out a couple items, like the bathrooms & laundry closet. But you should get the jist of the place. It's not much -- but it really is a haven, a safe place to let down your hair...or just wear your sweats. Here we go...

The "back" of the cabin
The cabin sits on a canal -- so the locals refer to the side facing
the canal as the "front"
Our "one butt" kitchen -- simple & to the point.
Ideally in a few years we're going to re-model this bad boy to make
it more functional :)
Dad & Hubby doing work in the downstairs bedroom
It's not a lovely shade of yellow
Dining Area + bamboo shelf w/ family photos & trinkets
Living Room -- mom & I will be painting side tables white
And we're on the hunt for the perfect coffee table...
Our room upstairs -- new bed & everything! Pretty peaceful
Upstairs sitting area...mom calls this the "den"
View from upstairs sitting area out to the canal
Sun porch
I've said it before & I'll say it again -- this is probably one of my most favorite places in the world. The town is unpretentious, the people are kind, and it's quiet. I love this place. My Gran was such a good steward with her home to leave a wonderful place for us to go to & rest. I can not wait until the next weekend I can get up there!!

The Cabin
I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned it before -- but there is a place that completely calms my soul. It's the one place where I have always been allowed to just kick my feet up & nap all day long if that's what I had on my agenda. My Gran's cabin is the best place on earth. It is so calm, so quiet, and so unassuming. No false pretenses in Ocean Shores. Just real people living life. No hoity-toity personality, just down to earth life. It's so refreshing.
Since my Gran passed last year, it was hard at first to go there and not think she was just upstairs in her room napping (something she was notorious for). But in spite of her not physically being there -- the peace that came with just being present in the cabin was immeasurable. My mom & I have often described it as being like getting a big hug from Gran. I try to go up there at least once a month, just to decompress and rest. And let me tell you -- this coming weekend can't get here soon enough! We'll be tackling a few projects around the cabin, but mostly looking forward to kicking up my feet and resting.
It's comforting to be in the place that my Gran loved so much & be surrounded by reminders of her. Her motto for the beloved cabin: "It's just the beach" -- which always meant, there's no pressure here so just be yourself!
I'll try and snap some pictures of the cabin this weekend to share.
On a side note -- I have to apologize for the nutty, pessimistic posts lately. Ever go thru those phases where nothing seems to be right or in line? That's been me. But was reminded at church yesterday to submit to the Lord with humility & trust that the "upper" story will take care of the "lower" story I'm living. But I'm always welcoming prayers in that department -- releasing things aren't my strong suit.

Bite The Bullet
Alright it's about time I bite the bullet.... I've finally signed up to take my real estate exam.
I've been working full time with & for my mom in her office since I graduated in 2008. I think having always "worked" with my mom since I was little I have dragged my feet about it.
There's something about working with your parent all that time -- I sometimes get a little worried/consumed with anxiety/fear that I'm doing this to please my mom or be the dutiful daughter. But then there are times when I even catch myself off guard by how good I am (not to sound like an ego-maniac) at what I'm doing here. The positives right now outweigh any fear I have, and I'm sure as time goes on I'll see how I fit & exactly what I bring to the table each & every day
So I'm not going to delay this any further -- rather than just talk about getting my license, I'm going to to do it. My test is scheduled for February 16th. Meaning for the next 30+ days I will be studying my rear end off, taking the test simulator multiple times over, and praying I'm not one of the fateful many that fail the first time thru.
Say a prayer for me as the day draws near...

Oh family...
I'm gonna keep it short & sweet today....
I love having my little brother home, it makes me wish he were back home full time. But I'm proud of what he's doing too.
But even with him home, there's always a little bit of drama/chaos/misunderstandings. And being the big sister that I am & add to that the fact that I am the one who's home -- I have to play mediator some of the time. It's necessary and I'm happy to do it so that our family stays in tact :)
Tonight's agenda....Wii, spaghetti, taking down ornaments (yes I know it's late...we've been traveling!), time with brother & my niece. All in all -- a good night ahead!

Oh Hey Random Thoughts
Yup -- picking up the slack from where I have left off.
NO more piles of junk laying around. If it comes out of its home...it goes back. Seems simple right?? Well here's to being organized & being a bit more domestic this year!
And besides that....I don't really have much else on my brain. Except for this nagging thought that I don't want to miss out on my life. Any moment of it. And so I'm going to be fully engaged in my life from here on out -- of course, allowing for proper care/rest I'm looking forward to being in my life instead of watching time pass by!
Oh these random nights alone at home...the things that come to mind :)
But in other news -- I am married to an angel. Honey Isaac spent this whole past weekend helping my dad & brother complete some projects at my Gran's cabin. He is such a gem & so kind, and not to mention patient with my kooky pops. It was such a nice quiet, peaceful time with family taking care of the special place Gran left for us.
Emptying my brain of all these random thoughts is kind of nice but I don't have any more time -- it's back to my laundry duties for the evening!

I'm Back....and Alive!
Dear Friends! I so apologize for my absence this past week or so! Prepping for vacation, early birthday celebrations & then time in Hawaii were my total focus these last two weeks.
It was so nice to enjoy my birthday with husband in Waikiki this year -- a special treat! We even treated ourselves to private pool cabana chairs at the adult pool! Thank you Sheraton Waikiki for this ingenious perk! Reserved it for the whole day....do you know how hard it is to get good pool chairs & hold on to them all day?! Especially in Waikiki! And the weather was pretty nice to us during the trip, just a few rain showers a couple days -- but then we had a BEAUTIFUL Christmas day at the North Shore! Tried to take some more photos this trip - and finally jumped on the Instagram train...so some of them are tinted that way!

Our view for the day! Beautiful Diamond Head
Driving to hike Diamond Head w/ our buddy Nate
View towards Waikiki & downtown from Le'ahi (Diamond Head)
Post hike snack....hot malasadas at the famous Leonard's Bakery!
Ike hold our niece Zaylee on Christmas eve -- such a happy, smiley baby!
One of three turtles that came on shore Christmas day!
Mele Kalikimaka?? Cousin Makoa
Christmas Day North Shore style!
Ike painted large Hanafuda (Japanese card game) cards for his cousins & aunt!
Isaac & the women in his life! MIL Sheila, Grandma Chiko, & Me
Merry (late) Christmas from the Parkers!
It was a nice trip, had good opportunities to visit with cousins Reid & Kim, Isaac's dad & step-dad. We both are thankful for family, and for non-touristy vacations sometimes. Christmas in Hawaii is different (from food, to weather & more) but it's Isaac's first home & so we are thankful for time together & time with extended family!
Hope you all enjoy this week & New Year's weekend! I'll snap some photos of my family -- little brother is headed home TODAY(yaaaaaaaay)! And so we're headed to my Gran's cabin in WA to ring in the New Year and be together. So looking forward to quality time!

Random thoughts...
Tonight Honey Isaac & I gave my parents their Christmas gift. Now before you gasp in horror at the thoughts of a Christmas gift given this early, let me explain... My mom is pretty sensitive to the fact that Isaac & I are still early in our marriage & trying our darndest to pay off debt, save for future babies, and are traveling to beautiful but expensive Hawaii in a week. So for the 3rd Christmas in a row they haven't asked for traditional gifts. Rather she & my dad have asked to spend time with us or do something special or specific for the season. This year my mom spent 2 weeks on vacation in Mexico (1st time she's EVER done this) and was totally stressed about getting & decorating their tree.
So for their Christmas gift, my mom & dad asked us to pick up their Christmas tree, get it set up & then decorate it for them. We picked up the tree the Saturday after Thanksgiving, in TRUE Christmas babe style (did I mention that my birthday is in 9 days???). But then we waited to decorate until they were both home. Well tonight we mosey-ed over to their house & decorated their tree. It was fun to be with my parents again. I'd seen my dad over the last few days - but it's always so funny and entertaining watching he & mom together.
Sometimes I feel really guilty that that is our Christmas "gift" -- but then I remember why my mom asks for things like that & I'm grateful. Grateful for an understanding momma, grateful that my parents don't EVER put pressure on us to wow them with material things, and grateful that I have a husband who loves being with my parents as much as they love being with him (have I ever mentioned that I sometimes wonder if they love him more than me???....hmm....). We even had dinner together & my aunt joined. It was a peaceful, enjoyable night. And I'm so thankful that my parents don't make us feel like we have to shower them with un-ending amounts of gifts to show our love & appreciation for them. They're incredible blessings to us.
How do you handle gifts for parents??
And not to rub it in or anything -- but in one week I will be in beautiful, wonderful, warm, friendly, relaxing Hawaii for vacation! Can not wait -- after two weeks without my mom in the office I am beyond ready for some down time. We'll be spending a couple days in Waikiki for my birthday & then the rest of the time with Isaac's family. Which will be nice -- we've been able to see them more than usual this year & it'll be nice to cap off the year with time in Hawaii again. It's crazy how the time flies. It seems like we were just in Hawaii with all of Isaac's family celebrating Christmas, digging for sand crabs & relaxing by the sea on Christmas day. But here we find ourselves again, preparing for the anxiety of flying standy-by during the holidays & preparing to be with family. I always tend to miss my family functions at Christmas -- but I know how much it means to be in Hawaii at Christmas for Isaac & so we go.
Hope you preparing for Christmas in your own way also. Remember the reason for this joyous season -- the birth of our Saviour King, Christ Jesus!

Oh Dear! Days of Gratitude!
Yikes! I am WAY behind on my days of gratitude! So sorry friends! The end of last week did not go as I planned & was in a bit of slump. Thankfully the slump seems to have been cured by a solo night in on Friday....wait...I'll share this info in my Days of Gratitude :)
Day 18 -I was thankful for a quiet night on my couch, dinner provided by Chipotle, and a cat nap that kind of made me feel like an old lady. But I was also thankful for the relationship between Isaac & my dad -- I love how close they are, and how my dad loves Isaac as his own pretty much. My dad's a character, and you really need patience with him sometimes. But the two of them went to a playoff football game & got a beer afterwards. Blessings abound in seeming them together, getting along!
Day 19 - Despite the fact that I was a royal brat to Isaac for the majority of the day - I was reminded of how much (and often) I need to be thankful for him. He is incredibly kind & thoughtful. And gracious....man is he ever gracious. On a day when I absolutely deserved to be whipped with a wet noodle, the man showers me with grace. God...are you sure you want me to be with him?? Really? God really must know what He's doing...
Day 20 - Yesterday I was thankful for a reminder in church about giving (tithing specifically) and what is/should be behind our giving -- appreciation, a spirit of sharing, and an eternal perspective. To give with a glad heart, knowing that the Lord has everything under control -- including my finances and my earthly surroundings.
Day 21 - Today I am thankful that I have a body that is able to wake up early (though it's not always pretty....) and be active. This morning honey Isaac & I drug our butts to our local gym and got a work out in. Sure, we debated skipping for about 15minutes -- but wonderful husband reminded me that I made the decision last night before going to bed & that's the decision that stands. So off we went. Also thankful for marrying a freakin' Renaissance man! Isaac fixed my front bumper (*note to self..do not park with curbs/etc in front of me...) after we got home from the gym. He's pretty freaking awesome.
I can't believe the end of November is around the corner & that Christmas will be here literally in a matter of weeks. Crazy how the year always seems to fly by. I'm convinced it does so at a much faster pace with each passing year. But it's always good to be reminded of how much we each have, how much we each can share, and how much we each are in need of the Savior born in a humble way. That is what I'm most looking forward to with the upcoming Advent season...reminders of the quiet, gentle way that Christ came in to the world He would later save.
Happy Monday friends!

Days of Gratitude - Day 17, 2011
Day 17 - Today I am thankful for my little brother. He's a pretty spectacular guy. I mean honestly, the girl who is blessed enough to grab his attention is going to be beyond lucky. The kid is responsible, kind, and gracious beyond words. We've had our rough patches -- but our young adult lives have been filled with great conversations, fun adventures, & lots of love. Plus the kid is in the Navy, is a Corspman (and freakin' good at that!), and chose to serve our country. That pretty much makes him the best person around.
He's pretty awesome!
From our brother/sister trip to Disneyland before my wedding in 2009
I'm proud of my little brother. And I'm so interested to see who he ends up with and how his life will unfold!
Looking forward to the weekend already - nothing special planned. More work & a restful Sunday are on my agenda. Can not wait!

Days of Gratitude - Day 10, 2011
Day 10 - Today I am grateful for the United States Marine Corps. I am grateful for the role that this branch of the military played in the lives of my parents; and ultimately my life. I am grateful for the sacrifice of the men & women who proudly wear the eagle, globe, & anchor (symbolizing the Marine Corps' presence in the sky, on land, & on the sea). I am grateful for their dedication to excellence, protection, and pride in our nation. And most of all, I am grateful for the incredible sacrifices made & being made by past, present, & future Marines.

I swell with pride when it comes to my dad & mom and their service!

Ohhhhh Family!
I am literally containing my hysterical laughing at my parents...they are freakin' hilarious sometimes. My crazy dad andhis random outbursts & my focused mom who makes her presence known at all times.
Even if they drive me nuts sometimes they're not all bad, thankfully. I think I forget how fun & funny they are. But tonight is a good reminder.... They're not all bad :)

Spergi Family
My entire life my father has always been one of those quirky guys, that all my friends loved, the guy who would drive us to games & make up his own words to our songs. He was the guy who would bend over backwards for our pets and could figure out any mechanical issue no matter what. He was never super touchy, huggy kind of guy - unless I forced him or pushed him. And there were times when it seemed like my dad went from zero to sixty with his temper - and then it would be like nothing happened.
There were times when I just didn't understand my dad - as I grew up and learned more about his history, his family story & what not, that it started to make some sense as to how he acted and why he responded the way he did in certain situations. So then it was just that my dad was quirky.
An added element -- about 15 years ago my eldest sister had a son. When my nephew was about 5 years old he was diagnosed with Aspergers. Aspergers is on the austim spectrum, and is typically a fairly high functioning form of autism. There's been a lot of study as of late on Aspergers. Those with Aspergers can often times display inability to maintain eye contact, atypical social skills, abnormal application of emotions to various situations, repetitive behaviors, and limited abilities to express empathy. My nephew was put in to speech therapies and special classes early on - and our family all jumped on board to help Anthony continue to learn & grow. There have been some studies that have linked Aspergers to being genetic. And honestly, when I look at my sister and compare her behavior to that of my nephew I think I could fall in that camp. I imagine that my sister is what my nephew would be like had he not had the intervention, therapy, and care that he has received. She definitely lacks the ability express and have empathy for others, she isn't able to process appropriate emotions for varying situations.
About a month ago, a friend of my mother's encouraged her to read a book about an adult male who shared his story, a memoir of his life experiences and how at the age of about 50 a therapist friend helped come to the conclusion that he had been living with Aspergers. My mom apparently read it in about 2 days - and tried to push it on me. At first I didn't want anything to do with it, my dad didn't/doesn't have Aspergers -- he's just quirky, a product of his not so normal or steady child hood, a product of 25 years in the Marine Corps, a product of working with mechanical things day in and day out for 30+ years. He just had his quirks! I don't know why I was pushing off the book, pushing off the thought that perhaps my dad did have some tendencies. Maybe I was scared. Maybe I was nervous about the fact that my dad might have been living with a mild form of Aspergers his entire life and didn't realize/know it. Don't mis-understand me, there is nothing wrong with anyone with Aspergers, they aren't damaged, they aren't useless or troublesome. Those with Aspergers simple process situations differently, their brains function at a different pace & focus on much different focal points than others.
And so while on a 4 hour drive to my Gran's cabin over Memorial Day I picked up mom's Kindle and started reading...and right off the bat there were things that popped up that echoed some behaviors I had always noticed in my dad (*Disclaimer -- this in no way is to come across that these particular behaviors mean you have Aspergers, I can't diagnose any one...this is simply a recognition of similarities between this man & my father). This man seemed to give different unique names for everyone & everything around him -- my dad always had nicknames for people; ex: my mom = The Blonde Bomb, me = Pahnootsan (Pahnooty, Pahnoots, etc), brother = Alli-Babah. This man was incredibly mechanically inclined and could focus & problem solve -- my dad can look at a motor, a traffic signal, anything really and figure out how to fix it & fix it quickly. And it was interesting to see how this man's social interactions with those around him mirrored my father's social interactions. It was so intriguing and it helped to put things in to perspective for me and help me understand my father, how he likely processes situations, and how I can help strengthen & support my dad.
So now when my dad is in his quirks that don't quite fit, mom & I lovingly tell him he's having a "Spergi" moment. The author of the book calls others with Aspergers "Spergians." So now I am coming to terms with the fact that I likely have been living with a pretty high functioning Spergi my entire life. And rather than be upset or distraught about the fact that I likely have a "different" dad - it's cool to think that my dad approaches life in an entirely unique way, and try to see what I can learn from him & his experiences & how he views the world.
Definitely recommend you to check out the book - it might change your view of those living and thriving with Aspergers.

Mother
I know I've shared before how often my mother frustrates me - or how we get on each other's nerves (due to working with one another every day...). But this past weekend I went to my grandmother's cabin with her and I had a revelation. I'm not always going to have my mom around, I'm not always going to get to hug her whenever I want, I'm not always going to be able to travel with my mom. She's one of my best friends, one of the few people in the world I can be completely honest with, and one of the few people I know will constantly support me in whatever path I choose. How many people can say that?
It was good to be at my Gran's cabin for the weekend & be with my Aunt. It was the first time I had been back since the day Gran passed away. Honestly, it was nice & actually comforting to be there, smelling the musty beach air and seeing things still in their proper places. I only had to move one greeting card that was blocking a photo of my Poppy, but other than that all was well. I'd missed being there - and hadn't quite realized how much til I got there. And while many may not believe it - Gran knew I was there too. While reading on the couch Saturday morning, both Mom & I heard a single, loud thump on glass of the doll case situated near by. Right away - we looked at each other & smiled, Gran knew I was there. That is one of my first memories of Gran....a shared love of dolls, and up until like my 21st birthday she always got me a doll of some sort for my birthday. The only hard moment came when it was time to leave...I ran upstairs to make sure I hadn't left anything (a game Gran used to play with us...to make sure we didn't leave our belongings), and in her room I found her favorite perfume, Oscar by Oscar De La Renta. Definitely an old lady perfume, but the smell of it brought me to tears & reminded me how much I missed her.
Though not perfect - she was the woman who raised the woman that became my mother. A legacy of strong, independent, sometimes overly stubborn women. Part of those traits seem to be linked to our Norwegian heritage, and part of them are the traditions passed down thru many generations of the strong women in our family. Honestly I think with each passing generation of mothers & daughters in our family, the bond & friendship grows stronger. And I hope I can continue that legacy & trajectory.
So despite my common frustrations with my mom I can't say I would trade her for anything. I wouldn't take any mother over my own. And I think I can safely say she wouldn't trade me either! Phew!
Give your mom, or mother-figure, a hug, call, or text today. They deserve it.

Denver Wedding
Here are some quick photos of my brother-in-law's wedding this past weekend.
Please forgive the terrible quality... My little Nikon Coolpix is all I have.
And I am admittedly not a skilled photographer!
Quick stop at Sea-Tac - we've been up for about 4 hrs already...and it was only 7:00am!
Isaac was quite excited for our meal at Cracker Barrel...haha
With our little cousin Makoa - ring bearer in our wedding & Matt & Crystal's
Crystal's church where they were married
My mother-in-law & father-in-law's girlfriend sipping an ENORMOUS margarita!
Waiting for his bride...so sweet
Exchanging their vows.
Overall a nice weekend away with family. Not too many stressful moments, thankfully. It's nice to be back home, but it sure is hard to get back in to the swing of things! Oh well...just need to make it to next Thursday & then we're off to northern California for another wedding! Phew!

Back Home
Finally made it back home from our quick trip to Denver for brother-in-law's wedding. I'll post up some pics tomorrow. I only snapped a few, and some of the ones from the wedding are a little off - but I'll post none the less.
It was a good trip. Quite honestly the first time I think I've felt like I was a part of Isaac's family. It was a nice change from previous trips. I wasn't sure how I would fit in during all the pre-wedding activities....so I tried to just step in & volunteer to take care of Isaac's grandma. I think she's the cutest, but I also don't have as much history as everyone else. I walked with her, made sure she didn't trip, made sure she had her jacket, watched her purse...anything she needed. And I'm happy to say that I think that's exactly what my mother-in-law needed. A short, small reprieve a few times during the trip to allow her to focus on Matt, Crystal, the wedding & herself. I was happy to be able to help in that way - to contribute in that small way.
And now we are back home, back in the swing of our life. I love coming home, to our home....to our normal. I was reminded a number of times this weekend how thankful & blessed I am to be married to Isaac, to be a part of his life, to be creating a life & world of our own.
So back to catching up on our DVR'd shows & switching over the initial rounds of post travel laundry.

Family
Happy Easter all! All in all this Easter was good -- minus Isaac being in Bend with his golf team. But in all honesty, the highlight was spending the afternoon with my extended family. Growing up I always felt a little lost in my family. When everyone gets together, family, spouses, & kids there's easily 60 of us. A fact that still blows some of my friends away. There were many Thanksgivings & Christmases spent eating in a garage because that was the only space big enough for all of us.
This year it was one set of my cousins (the Hilligoss' & their kids/spouses), my fave cousin Tasha & her family, my parents, my aunty, the Hilligoss' aunt & uncle & cousin. Definitely didn't have everyone in attendance, but it still felt like the crazy family get togethers of yesterday. The only thing missing was our Grandma Jewel. No one really talked about it - but at the point of hiding eggs for the little kids I felt a small pang missing her & her laugh. She would have been cracking up at my little cousin Cooper.
As I get older I appreciate my large family & all it's craziness more & more. I appreciate all the dynamics that everyone brings to the mix. I appreciate the way Cindy wants to plan all our big family get togethers, I appreciate the go with the flow naivety of my cousin Tasha & how she sees the best in everyone, I appreciate the awkward intelligence of my cousin Tyler, I appreciate the no bull personality of my cousin Kelly, I appreciate the gentleness & family focus of my cousin Kayla, I appreciate the way my cousin's husband Chad just fits w/ our crazy neurotic clan, I appreciate the spunky personality of Colby's wife Heather, I appreciate the way Colby always seems to make people chuckle, I appreciate the gentleness of my cousin Kyle, and I especially appreciate & love the way all of us want to maintain the big family experience for the next generation. Maybe that's the biggest realization that came out of today -- it's us now, we are the ones that have to make the plans, keep us getting together, keep the few family traditions alive. Whew that's crazy - it's always been my parents, my aunties & uncles, Grandma & Grandpa Pat & Grandpa Butch. But I suppose that's the natural course of life...
Crazy how changes seem to sneak up on us...
